We are an official and award-winning taxidermy company
When you buy a mounted butterfly from De Museumwinkel.com, you're making a conscious choice. Not just for a beautiful natural specimen, but for a story of sustainability, respect, and collaboration with local communities around the world.
We work with butterfly farms in countries such as Suriname, Peru, Costa Rica, Thailand, Malaysia, Congo, and Indonesia. These farms operate in protected environments where butterflies can complete their full life cycle safely — free from predators, with plenty of food and space to reproduce. Most tropical butterflies live for just one to two weeks. After their natural death, they are carefully dried and preserved.
What makes these farms truly special is their contribution to both conservation and local livelihoods. Instead of capturing butterflies from the wild, people are given the opportunity to earn a sustainable income through butterfly farming. This helps prevent exploitation of fragile ecosystems and supports stable local economies. Many farms span several football fields and play a vital role in preserving rainforest plants, flowers, and trees.
At De Museumwinkel.com, we take our responsibility seriously. We personally visit every butterfly farm we work with to ensure that all specimens are ethically and responsibly sourced. Transparency and care are at the heart of everything we do.
Since 2012, we’ve partnered with the Pilpintuwasi butterfly farm in Peru. This remarkable farm is dedicated not only to preserving butterfly populations, but also to education and animal welfare. Their mission is clear: to end illegal wildlife trafficking through education, rescuing animals in need, and protecting natural habitats.
Through their Uakari project, Pilpintuwasi works to reintroduce endangered species into their original environments. A portion of every mounted butterfly sold through our shop goes directly to support this farm. You can even become a donor yourself and help fund their broader rescue efforts.
A mounted butterfly is more than a decorative object. It’s a tangible contribution to conservation, fair trade, and education. By choosing De Museumwinkel.com, you’re supporting projects that truly make a difference.
