FAQ

Where do the products come from?

All our mounted animals have died of natural causes in zoos or breeding farms; they were not killed for decoration.

Butterflies and insects come from responsible breeding locations in South America, Africa, and Asia. These farms aim to support natural populations. Species that are at risk of extinction are bred and released back into the wild to strengthen the ecosystem. The life cycle of a butterfly averages 5–10 days. The bred butterflies end up with us and are carefully mounted or framed. Your purchase directly contributes to biodiversity conservation and supports local communities. https://www.demuseumwinkel.com/nl/info/vlinderkwekerijen/

Will my order come with a CITES number?

For products that require a CITES number, the number will be included with delivery, or the appropriate CITES documents will be provided. For EXPORT outside the EU, we will contact you after the order. Additional EXPORT documents are required at an extra cost.

CITES stands for the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora. It is an international agreement aimed at preventing the extinction of endangered animal and plant species by regulating trade. A CITES number indicates that the product has been legally and responsibly obtained and traded in accordance with international regulations.

Who makes the products?

For 15 years, our animals have been mounted by our certified taxidermists, including 4 European/Dutch champions. All our taxidermists are experienced and skilled. Curious for a behind-the-scenes look or more of their work? Check out our social media Instagram link.

Our butterflies and insects are mounted by our entomologists, who work with extreme precision thanks to their many years of experience. Mounting insects is a particularly delicate task, as the wings and legs are extremely fragile.

What is the delivery time for my package?

Regular package

Once you place a regular order (an order that does not contain animals that still need to be mounted for you), our team immediately starts collecting and preparing the products for shipment. We aim to deliver the package to the selected shipping company within 24 hours on business days.

Animal to be mounted on request

The product description will indicate whether an animal will be mounted on request for you. It will also mention how many months this process will take. For birds, this usually takes 3–6 months, and for mammals, 7–12 months. Animals that will be mounted on request are kept in our freezer until a taxidermist is ready to work on your piece. You can then make an appointment to collect the animal from our store.

Do you also mount animals on request?

Yes, our taxidermists also mount animals on request. Have you found an animal yourself that you would like to have mounted, or would you like to have your own pet preserved? You can contact us to have it mounted. See the articles below for more information on custom taxidermy.

How much does it cost to have an animal mounted on request?

Each assignment is unique, so we offer custom pricing. The cost depends on the type of animal, the desired pose, and the level of detail. Feel free to contact us for a non-binding price estimate tailored to your specific wishes.

Do you also ship internationally?

Yes, we ship worldwide. Orders are shipped at your own risk. In some cases, for orders outside the EU, you may need to arrange your own transport company to pick up the order from us. Please contact us in advance to discuss the options and conditions for orders outside the EU.

Why is the body often missing from Morpho butterflies?

The fat content in the abdomen can leak out after death and stain the wings. For this reason, the body is usually removed to keep the delicate blue reflective surface intact and aesthetically pleasing.

Do you also have a physical store?

Yes, we also have a store you can visit in person. You are welcome in our shop at van Welderenstraat 114, Nijmegen. Discover our free museum section featuring rare animals, exotic birds, mysterious shrunken heads, and extraordinary skeletons with abnormalities and deformities. A unique experience you won't find anywhere else.
