Capra ibex

The ibex has a very peculiar history. It is a species that almost became extinct in the past because its horns and blood were believed to be good for impotence and kidney stones. In order to meet the demand, the ibex was hunted en masse, causing the population to drop below 100 at its lowest point. Hunting was banned in the 19th century and since then the population has increased every decade. Thanks to this near extinction, the ibex has adapted to reproduce outside its own species in order to introduce more genetic diversity into the gene pool. The new mating partner has become the goat, but the effect has been counterproductive; the offspring of this cross have proved to be virtually infertile, as the two species are still too genetically different.
