An armillarium is a celestial sphere with metal rings representing the most important circles of the sky. Usually the earth is placed in the middle of metal circles. The planes of the horizon, the meridian and the celestial equator are represented by fixed circles. The armillarium is designed as an instrument to determine position or time.
