Canis lupus

Origin: Eurasia

Wolves traditionally have a bad reputation, which is only partly true. Of course, wolves, like other predators, can be dangerous, especially if handled incorrectly. However, the many horror stories about their malevolence (as in the fairy tales Little Red Riding Hood, The Wolf and the Three Little Piglets and The Wolf and the Seven Goats) seem unjustified. Yet conservationists everywhere struggle to reinstate the species anywhere because of these myths. Yet wolves do not have a negative role in all stories. For example, the city of Rome was founded - according to legend - by Romulus and Remus, two children who grew up as savages and were suckled by a wolf, the Lupa Capitolina, and the little boy Mowgli from Rudyard Kipling's "Jungle Book" was also raised in a wolf horde. That wolves can take care of human foundlings has been documented, including the Hessian wolf children (1341-1344).
