This iridescent ammonite is the fossilised remains of a squid-like marine animal that lived in the oceans millions of years ago. Ammonites had a spiral shell and were related to today's squids and octopuses. Natural processes have given the fossil a shiny, colourful surface, with striking hues ranging from red and green to gold. Each specimen is unique and gives a tangible impression of our planet's distant past.
