Have you always wanted to know how an animal is preserved through taxidermy?

On Thursday, October 22, 2026, De Museumwinkel.com in Nijmegen will once again offer an exclusive behind-the-scenes look. From 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., award-winning taxidermist Sophie Kiela will give continuous demonstrations, showing exactly how this centuries-old craft works, from the first incision to the finished result.

One of the faces of the Dutch championship team

Sophie Kiela is a taxidermist at De Museumwinkel.com and won several awards at the 2026 Dutch Taxidermy Championships in Steyl. Among other achievements, she won the title of Best All-Round Taxidermist and the Audience Award with her full-mount fox. Sophie had already been crowned Dutch Champion multiple times in previous editions of the Dutch Championships. She is now regularly invited to radio and television programs and featured in newspapers to talk about her profession.

Experience the craft up close

Visitors of all ages are welcome to ask questions and follow the process up close. The demonstrations take place during the autumn school holidays, making it a great outing for families and nature enthusiasts. Taxidermy has long since left its dusty image behind. De Museumwinkel.com shows just how versatile and refined the craft of taxidermy can be.

Growing demand for pet taxidermy

The demand for preserving pets through taxidermy is increasing, and Sophie is one of the taxidermists who has further specialized in this field in recent years. “Preserving a pet requires an enormous amount of empathy and precision,” says Sophie Kiela. “You are not just reconstructing an animal, but also a memory.” During the demonstration day, visitors will also have the opportunity to ask questions about this subject.
