Origin: Tanzania
The striped hyena is a typical hyena, with a large, broad head, a long neck and long legs, a sloping body (the shoulders are much higher than the hips) and a typical gait. It is smaller than the spotted hyena. It is the smallest of the bone-cracking hyenas and retains many primitive animal-like features lost in larger species, with a smaller and less specialised skull. Although mainly a scavenger, large specimens have been known to kill their own prey and on rare occasions have attacked humans.
